What to Wear: Color Inspiration for Family Photos

Family photos capture beautiful memories, but choosing what to wear can feel overwhelming. The right color palette can make your photos look cohesive, flattering, and timeless. As a photographer and color analyst, I help families select colors that complement their natural tones and the photo setting. Coordinating outfits doesn’t mean everyone has to match exactly! A well-thought-out color scheme:

1. Starts with One Main Color
Instead of trying to match everyone exactly, pick one main color as the foundation. This could be a shade that complements your location (e.g., soft blues for the beach, earthy tones for fall).

2. Builds a Coordinated Color Palette
Once you have a main color, add two to three complementary shades that balance the look.

3. Consider the Season & Location
Your color choices should align with the setting. Light, airy tones work well for the beach, while rich, earthy hues are perfect for a fall backdrop.

4. Mix Patterns & Textures
To add visual interest, mix solid colors with subtle patterns (like florals, plaids, or stripes). Just avoid large logos or busy prints that can be distracting.

5. Coordinate Without Matching Exactly
Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans (and if you are looking for that type of session, I am probably not your photog)! Instead, aim for a cohesive look where each family member’s outfit complements the overall palette while reflecting their personality.

Another tip… No matter how beautiful the color scheme, if you or your family members don’t feel comfortable, it will show in the photos! Make sure everyone feels great in their outfits.

Baby Adams Adoption Fundraiser

Thrilled to support my friend Jenna and her husband, Bryson, as they raise funds to adopt a baby! Believe it or not, domestic adoption costs can range between $45,000- $75,000+. Although I did not have money to donate to their fund, I did have time and talent and offered to do mini sessions in Jenna’s parent’s back yard for their network of friends. We raised $1,000!

Sharing sneak peeks of some of our fav images from the six families who helped with the cause. Learn more about the Baby Adams Adoption fundraiser here.

Addison- Fort Myers Beach Senior Session

Addison has vacationed in Fort Myers since she was in elementary school. A native of Minnesota, she wanted palm trees, sunshine, and sandy beaches to commemorate her senior photos. Naturally, it made sense to schedule a senior portrait session during her recent vacation to SWFL with her mom. Addison was an absolute delight to work with and is beautiful inside and out! We can’t wait to share a sneak peek of her session at the Alliance for the Arts and Bowditch Point Beach with Molly and Matt Photo.

Surprise Memorial Day Nuptials | Fort Myers, FL

Mark and Alicia really wanted to do something unique and different for their friends and family. Weddings can be a lot of stress on everyone involved and they were looking to do something fun and relaxed.

Solution… A pool party for 70 of their closest friends and family. Surprise Memorial Day Nuptials!

Mark and Alicia have been dating for 7 years so most people weren’t expecting them to ever get married. The couple loved giving people an unforgettable experience and getting to see the shock and happiness on their faces (as you will see in the photos).

Fun fact- They almost got married in their bathing suits but thanks to the advice of several of Alicia’s friends, they decided to do casual outfits to stand out from guests and make it feel more special.

It was a honor to attend and photograph the surprise.

Vendors: DJ Flex from Curate Entertainment, Juan Santiago from JS Xx’tra Pair of Hands, LLC, Cookies from LadyCakes Bakery, and Champagne toast(s) courtesy Bubbly Bee.

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Shannon!

I was thrilled to finally get to photograph the Ware family. I was supposed to do Lauren and Trey’s maternity photos last spring but I broke my wrist right before their session! Thankfully, we were able to work together for their family portrait session just before the holidays. Lauren’s daughter (and pup) are ADORABLE!!! I can’t wait to share a sneak peek of a few of our fav images at Koreshan State Park.

Bračić Family | Edison & Ford Winter Estates, Fort Myers, FL

It was a delight to be reunited with a old high school friend and her beautiful family. While Whitney and Javor were visiting from NYC we enjoyed a sunset stroll through the gardens at the Edison & Ford Winter Estates. Excited to share a few of our favorite images from their session.

Owen | Fort Myers Beach Senior Session

A few things before you ask why would we choose to do a photo session amongst the destruction on Fort Myers Beach after a category 4 hurricane.

Owen is a senior at Fort Myers High.

He loves fishing, boating, and skim boarding.

His family has (or had) a family beach house on Fort Myers Beach since the 1960’s.

His mom, Stefanie Ink Edwards, is the CEO of Community Cooperative. The day after the storm passed Stefanie was boots on the ground with Owen and her family leading the local effort to collect and distribute resources to the survivors of Hurricane Ian.

Hopefully some of this makes sense now. Life goes on in the wake of Ian. Owen is months away from graduating high school and will continue to be resilient with what ever life throws his way.

… and Fort Myers Beach still had so much tenacity and beauty to share with us five months after the storm. We hope you enjoy our day at the beach blog post with Owen.

I had the pleasure of photographing Annabelle Tometich, the award-winning journalist, food writer and restaurant critic. She spent 15 years pretending to be a white guy by writing restaurant reviews as Jean Le Boeuf for the USA TODAY Network. She recently shed the Frenchman pseudonym to review restaurants as her mixed-race self. She is at work on a memoir about her Filipina mother and biracial childhood in Robert E. Lee County, Florida, where she lives with her husband, two kids and two furry dog beasts. Find her on Twitter @atometich and Instagram @abellewrites. Price Family | Miromar Lakes, FL

One of our fav families to photograph, the Price’s opted for a sunset summer sesh a little early this year instead of our usual fall portrait session. The season swap meant radar monitoring for rain (thankfully the showers stayed away) and brighter colors for clothing (love, love, love). Alisa brought us to a new location (Miromar Lakes) that was sentimental to her and Kevin. Always such a fun time with this crew! Just a beautiful family inside and out.
